Job Description:
Responsibilities Responsible for planning and preparing for the
surgical procedure and assisting the surgeon. Assist in care of
hospital patients under the direction of nursing and the medical
staff. Position is responsible for adhering to all standards of
nursing care, and for promoting teamwork among co-workers. Attend
75% of department staff meetings and is accountable for all others
through the reading of meeting minutes. Attend all mandatory
in-services. Documentation of 10 educational hours in addition to
mandatory in-services. Participates in orientation and cross
training of new employees, students, and department personnel as
requested and documented in chronological order. Flexes hours as
needed, rotates call and stays late when needed to assist with the
schedule. Responds to request for help during unscheduled times.
Completes annual contact hour requirements. Attends unit meetings
either by attendance or by the reading of the minutes. Completes
annual Procedural Self-assessment. Demonstrates self-directed
learning and participates in continuing education annually to meet
own professional development and department specific requirements.
Complies with safety and emergency procedures Consistently
practices procedures to protect self and others and adheres to OSHA
exposure plan guidelines. Responds appropriately in an actual or
"drill" disaster, tornado and/or fire according to hospital and
department policy and procedure. Knows emergency Dept codes and
responds to those codes according to written procedure. Reviews
emergency alert codes on an annual basis and responds to these
codes according to written policy and procedure. Demonstrates
knowledge of the Birthplace surgery environment Uses the correct
dress code and Personal Protective Equipment as needed. Annually
completes the skills/equipment checklist Order case cart
requisitions according to procedure and specific doctors'
preference card. Open sterile supplies for procedure according to
specific doctor's preference card. Anticipate variables by having
instruments/supplies available in the room. Open only those
supplies/instruments necessary, as indicated by the preference card
to maintain effectiveness and reduce waste. Update doctor's
preference cards for change as indicated in department policy.
Specialty instruments and supplies are prepared for sterilization
by the end of the shift. Upon completion of procedure, supplies and
instrumentation are handled according to established procedures.
Room termination is completed according to established procedures.
Furniture, suture, and equipment are returned to proper places.
Verifying drugs and solution received from circulating nurse
according to department procedure. Observe for breaks in sterile
technique and handle according to department standards of care.
Perform counts according to department policy. Follow principles of
aseptic technique at all times according to standards of care.
Perform all surgical hand scrubs according to department procedure.
Proper OR attire is worn at all times according to department
policy. Contaminated supplies, instrumentation, and equipment
should be handled according to department standards of care.
Adheres to department confine and contain procedures. Properly
prepares instruments for decontamination. Knowledgeable of Basic
Aseptic techniques Scrub for operative procedures demonstrating
good aseptic technical knowledge of perioperative safety and
infection control guidelines. Handles instruments, sutures and
specimens appropriately. Delivery of sterile instruments to a
sterile field. Maintenance of a sterile field. Demonstrates correct
Materials Management (instruments, sponges, needles, etc.) Displays
various transfer techniques with sharps, as needed. Counting of
surgical objects as required per policy. Accountability of surgical
objects. Accountability and care of surgical specimens. Performs
other duties as required and assigned. Qualifications High school
graduate or GED required. BLS required. Surgical technology
preparation and/or experience in operating room technique
preferred. Nurse Aide experience is a preferred. Basic computer
skills required. Must successfully complete the pre-employment
